Ebook About
“Lovely...Another heartening story about the possibility of striking out in a new direction at any age. It is also a soothing read, especially welcome in these anxious times.” —Christian Science MonitorFrom the author of Meet Me at the Museum, a charming novel of second chances, about three women, one dog, and the narrowboat that brings them togetherEve expected Sally to come festooned with suitcases and overnight bags packed with everything she owned, but she was wrong. She arrived on foot, with a rucksack and a carrier bag. “I just walked away,” she said, climbing on to the boat. Eve knew what she meant.Meet Eve, who has left her thirty-year career to become a Free Spirit; Sally, who has waved goodbye to her indifferent husband and two grown-up children; and Anastasia, a defiantly independent narrowboat-dweller, who is suddenly landlocked and vulnerable. Before they quite know what they’ve done, Sally and Eve agree to drive Anastasia’s narrowboat on a journey through the canals of England, as she awaits a life-saving operation. As they glide gently – and not so gently – through the countryside, the eccentricities and challenges of narrowboat life draw them inexorably together, and a tender and unforgettable story unfolds. At summer’s end, all three women must decide whether to return to the lives they left behind, or forge a new path forward.Candid, hilarious, and uplifting, Anne Youngson's The Narrowboat Summer is a celebration of the power of friendship and new experiences to change one’s life, at any age.

Book The Narrowboat Summer Review :

Three women meet, unexpectedly. Each in a different stage of life, needing a change. What brings them together is a narrowboat on the canals of rural England. While it is the boat that draws the women together, it is less about the physical space that keeps them together. Anastasia’s lives on the boat and her little dog is the magnet that attracts the attention of Sally and Eve. The women discover that Anastasia needs a hand in bringing the narrowboat to another port for repair and is not in any position to do so as she has some mending of her own to do, of the medical variety. Not one to depend on others, this is a stretch for Anastasia. Eve and Sally have just met. Eve has just left her life, well, her corporate job, which is all she knows and is feeling as lost as can be. Sally has just walked out on her lifeless life with her husband and adult children. Each of the women is feeling a tad bit out of sorts, reluctant in terms of asking for help, but they quickly come up with a plan and off they go. Taking on the task of navigating the boat through waterways unknown to them, operating the locks, narrowly avoiding collisions with other boats, and meeting boaters along the way whose lives are entrenched in this way of life afloat.THE NARROWBOAT SUMMER is a charming story that celebrates differences, demonstrates the ability to tackle obstacles and turn them into adventure, and showcases the power of friendship turning up in the most surprising ways.
Very sweet novel about three women. The women are at a crossroads in their lives. Eve has been fired. Sally has just walked out on her marriage. Anastasia who has a been living on a narrowboat most of her life but not finds that she has a disease. These three women come together and basically help each other. Eve and Sally will move Anastasia's narrowboat to get fixed, while Anastasia will go to hospital and be treated. This novel really made me wish that I could chuck it all and live on a narrowboat. I'm sure it is not as idyllic as the novel portrays but it sure seems wonderful.
