When a surprise visitor brings unexpected news, his hope is breathed back to life. Will he finally obtain his deepest desires? Will Fitzwilliam Darcy be able to leave behind the agony of the past and hope for the future he once thought impossible?Due to circumstances beyond her control, Elizabeth Bennet’s family is irrevocably altered. Her father is dead, Lydia is missing, and her mother and remaining sisters are to be relegated to a life of poverty. Fitzwilliam Darcy’s behaviour at Pemberley indicates he still loves her, but too much has happened. She can never hope for him to once again make the offer of his hand. Elizabeth’s sole option is to abandon the life she once led and start anew. But what happens when her path once again crosses with the love she thought lost to her? Will Elizabeth choose to protect him with the one option available to her or will she put aside the agony of the past and choose hope?Book Agony and Hope Review :
I have read good books by this author, sadly, this is definitely not one of them. Many issues and I’ll list them from least important to stark annoyance and anger inducing -:- too many mundane descriptions. One does not need to know that Darcy raised his cup from his saucer, took a sip and placed the saucer and the cup on the table beside him. Really, those types of descriptions either attributes readers as imbeciles or are fillers for writer’s block. They add literally no value.- implausible, ridiculous premise. Two genteel young women run away to live in a disreputable part of London because one overheard they’d be a burden? And THEN you attribute such stupidity to Jane and Elizabeth Bennet who are thinking, feeling women? C’mon! By the way, HERE is where the author needed to pull her regency research together. What makes St Giles so unsavory? Really? Lice?- the convenient ‘sick and move into the rich man’s house’ premise. So, we start off with a Darcy full of despair over his dead love and then providence arrived in a hackney coach? The stuff of Lady Susan.- speaking of stupidity noted before…This Elizabeth is one of the stupidest I have ever encountered in jane Austen fan fiction. She has no agency whatsoever, her inner turmoil is affected and simpering and suddenly she transforms from coughing her lungs out to seduction by brandy sipping? Gimme a break.- lastly, but the most blatant fault. Token black people. I mean, they weren’t even invited to the wedding. I am well aware of the diversity discourse in JAFF but I’m not sure if to feel grateful that persons of colour are included in stories by (mostly white) authors, or to feel offended that these characters are inserted in such a way as to have little real value or to evoke any real emotional connection. Far less to have a reveal of what real acceptance or rejection these persons would have had at that time. In this story, the tokenism of blackness is offensive but at least the author is trying and perhaps would do better next time. This is a wonderful, well-written book which I highly recommend. I have lost sleep from being unable to put it down. Leslie Diamond writes with deep incite and emotion especially where Darcy is concerned. Jane is stronger here and seeks Darcy’s help when she is afraid Lizzy might die of what would be the flu and complications in today’s language. The two oldest Bennet sisters were supposed to be living with their Uncle Gardiner, but they feared they would be a financial burden and disappeared into a squalid part of London leaving behind word of their deaths, though there was a lot of uncertainty. There is quite a lot of mystery here that comes together at the end. This also has a likeable version of Lady Catherine who is still herself but with a kinder heart and is clearly of use.Darcy and Lizzy both have loved one another over the 2 to 3 years, and he was in great despair which was even worse with Georgiana marrying well and leaving with her husband. When a ragged and desperate Jane appeared things changed as he had hope, but that could have slipped away with Lizzy so desperately ill. She was also insistent that she could not marry him because of damage to his status, which did not matter much to him. There is also a mystery about Lydia, too. Thankfully Wickham was shipped away to the colonies and out of the picture after abandoning Lydia in an attempted elopement. What does not fully make sense is Lizzy thinking of returning to a squalid, dangerous, unhealthy neighborhood, and she snd Jane going there in the first place. Fortunately they met friends to protect them and help provide work with overflow sewing of dressmakers. Jane was a skilled seamstress here. It did take longer than I liked to get Lizzy to stop trying to run from her own happiness. Jane apparently had no desire to go back as she saw a chance for her future starting to come to light and she understood the health hazards better than Lizzy. She also understood Lizzy’s heart. Anyway, this is one of the outstanding variations that is very unique. The HEA seems like a long challenge at the start and near impossible. The things that do not seem to make sense would make less of a story. Thank you for such a wonderful and unique book.
